While people may know that chest pain should result in a trip to the emergency department (ED), many do not know about the importance of following up with a cardiologist afterward. Research recently published in Circulation found that patients who saw a cardiologist within 30 days of their ED visit were 21 percent less likely to experience a heart attack or death within the following year. Yet only 17 percent of all ED chest-pain patients were found to have had that crucial follow-up appointment.
